Welcome to Animal Allies:
Animals Healing Humans

It's so lovely to have you here with us at Animal Allies. I hope you'll enjoy sharing this exciting journey as Animal Allies: Animals Healing Humans becomes a book, a newsletter, a website and more. And look out for The Dragon Tapestries – a new fiction series set in Wales.

As promised, here are the five animal books you never knew you wanted to read:)
Copies can be discovered in charity shops, second-hand bookshops, friend's libraries, or through an online search. Have fun!

My Friend Flicka

I first read this book as a child and loved the story, although some parts brought me to tears.
Author Mary O'Hara (born 1885) wrote three classics about the range country: My Friend Flicka, Thunderhead, and Green Grass of Wyoming, all made into movies.

Written by Mara O'Hara, this book was first published in 1941.

Trigger in Europe

This gentle story will make you want to go and get your pony (or borrow one!), pack the saddlebags, and trot off into unexplored territory. Constancy and trust:)

Author William Holt rescued a white horse, and the pair journeyed more 20,000 miles over the Dolomites, Alps and the Apennines.

Published by Michael Joseph in 1966.

Barn 8

Described as comic-political drama, this story takes you into the intense world of chickens, and far into the future, and into your philosophy and choices in these challenging times.

Author Deb Olin Unferth won the 2009 Cabell First Novelist Award and a New York Times Book Review Critics' Choice.

Published by Graywolf Press in 2020, this paperback book is also available as an audiobook.

The Truth About Dogs

To truly understand dogs, we need to stop interpreting their behaviours through human terms. That's the basic premise of this book that combines genetics, science and archeology to show some complex and surprising truths about our canine companion

Author Stephen Budiansky previously edited Nature and writes about science, the environment and current affairs.

Published by Phoenix in 2002.

Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats

This book was the basis for the musical Cats (1981) by Andrew Lloyd Webber. It is a wonderfully whimsical collection of poems about cats in all their idiosyncratic ways.

Author T.S. Eliot wrote the poems in the 1930s, for his godchildren.

It was first published in 1939 by Faber and Faber.

What d'you think of this list? Are there other books that are definitely in your top 5? I'd love to hear about them!
